As the world receives socks and grocery store gift cards for another birthday, capitalism dictates I close my books and be judged by my sins for the past year.
For the three of you that have twenty tabs open, at some point opened this site, then never closed it, you'll know that I held myself to an ambitious amount of stuff-doing last year. Books being published, video games being released, YouTubes being updated - my God, what drugs did you people allow me to take!?
As time marched on, my priorities shifted a little like milk in a bowl. Then, some others shifted like your dog in the backseat. That means some things are extremely far ahead while others are bound and gagged in a dark corner just so I can forget the horrible things I've done for an hour or two. Like Christmas! That's what this post is for: To take stock about where I am, what work was done, and the house I plan to build for myself with all these excuses!
The two early and "easy" victory laps I'll take are around the launch of Simple Explanations and End The World - a satirical book series and a tight narrative adventure, respectively. Both of them fulfilled me greatly just to see out there, and one of them earned me enough sandwich money for a lunch or two. But not the combo meals.
My greatest learning experience definitely came from End The World and the entire process/care needed to put together a video game for release on a major platform. I'm a doer; I've never been one to study beforehand because I have unyielding faith that I'll know how to get the answer when the moment comes. That still proved true with the Epic release, but the pressure I put on myself to keep every thing in order meant a lot of last-minute Bing-ing (take that, Google!). A note on the Explanations - it is a series, and ongoing, and I haven't published another one this year yet. This is a bridge to my more over-ambitious plans where it became clear that my full weight wasn't in it. For me, idea fatigue is rarely a problem. I run full-force through processes - long and short - in order to see something through to the end. That "end" is a moving goal post. For the Explanations, it became very clear that my plan to flood the online marketplace with these funny little guys just wasn't going to move the mole hills as I wanted. So, I put them on the back-burner. That being said, I am very much behind on those as everything else has shifted.
Social media is such a boring, vapid chore of a "task" that I have no real desire to ever do traditionally again. There, I said it - after weeks and months of hemming and hawing, I admitted it and CAN NEVER TAKE IT BACK!
The concept of "Here is my opinion, please respond" feels like such a casual booty call. I don't want that much booty. Who could? I'm not Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The flesh AND the will are bruised and spongey. So, yes, my real progress via the socials is next to nil. I've started in Reddit, I've built a Discord that isn't ready for anyone but me to see, and I'm working on a few other ides to go with the Youtube re-vamp. Read: a lot of ideas that aren't manifest yet. To the juicy bits now - the television seasons! These I capitulated down from full seasons to "enough episodes to set the vibe", and through this lens, I absolutely succeeded. I'll go into deeper into those in an April post as well as some other writings that are coming out very, very wonderfully. Says me, my mother, and my reflection.
The two last good progressors are the pair of mystery game demoes I've been working on, which are coming along at a good pace. One game - called Taco Terror - is on Steam right now for wishlisting purposes and a big-ol' post and demo will be coming in the next few days. This process took roughly 3 months to put together, then another month to QA, with an amazing amount of learning and screwing up along the way. I'd love to start doing some dev diaries as I get to the more complicated parts of the game, but no promises.
The other mystery game, the web-based game, and ANOTHER pair of concepts are definitely going to be headliners this next year. I'm genuinely excited for all of these to eventually see the light of day, especially since they all really hit on different genres and gameplay styles. The Myggaming YouTube channel, while not dead, is still Rick Grimes in a coma. Work has quietly started, but the overwhelming amount of work needed to bring even one of my video ideas to life is taking a few iterations to make feasible. Being one person is my largest blocker here, which is genuinely stupid and something I blame entirely on modern medical science. Understand what we want, nerds! The scoreboard, I think, just barely swings towards me at the Keeping My Word Championship. 2024 is, somehow, more ambitious with an insane amount of goals and glass ceilings to smack my weak little fists against. You can expect the Great Timeline to be updated with this year's goals. You know, as my gift to you. Here's to dodging early on-set dementia until I complete all these things!
